You have finished your SSLC exams. Results are out, or about to be. And now comes the question that every student and parent faces: which stream should I choose for PU — Science, Commerce, or Arts? This decision feels enormous because it shapes the next two years and opens or closes doors to specific career paths. But it does not have to be stressful if you approach it with the right information. This guide lays out what each stream involves, who it suits best, and what career paths it leads to — without the marketing language. Just facts and honest advice.
The Three Streams at a Glance
In Karnataka's Pre-University system, students choose one of three streams at the start of I PUC. Within each stream, there are specific subject combinations. Your combination determines which competitive exams you can appear for and which degree courses you are eligible for after II PUC.
Science Stream
The Science stream is the most popular choice among high-scoring SSLC students, largely because it keeps the maximum number of career doors open. There are two main combinations:
- PCMB (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology): This is the most versatile Science combination. PCMB students can appear for NEET (medicine), CET/JEE (engineering), and virtually any Science-related entrance exam. The workload is significant — four full science subjects with both Maths and Biology — but the flexibility is unmatched.
- PCMC (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science): This replaces Biology with Computer Science. It is ideal for students who are certain about engineering, IT, data science, or technology careers and have no interest in medicine. The workload is somewhat lighter than PCMB since Computer Science is more logical and less memorisation-heavy than Biology.
Who should choose Science? Students who enjoy problem-solving, have strong foundations in Maths and Science from SSLC, and are considering careers in medicine, engineering, research, pharmacy, biotechnology, or technology.
Career paths after Science PU: MBBS, BDS, B.Pharm, B.E/B.Tech, B.Sc (various specialisations), BCA, B.Arch, veterinary science, agricultural science, nursing, and more. Science students can also switch to Commerce or Arts degree courses if they change their mind — the reverse is generally not possible.
At mLAC, PCMB students receive integrated NEET coaching through Arjuna Academy, and PCMC students receive integrated CET coaching — both within the regular college timetable. Learn more on the Science stream page.
Commerce Stream
Commerce is the fastest-growing stream in Karnataka, driven by increasing interest in CA, business management, banking, and finance careers. The subject combinations at most PU colleges include:
- SEBA (Statistics, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy): The traditional Commerce combination, ideal for CA and banking aspirants.
- CEBA (Computer Science, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy): Adds a technology dimension — good for fintech, e-commerce, and IT-enabled business careers.
- CSBA (Computer Science, Statistics, Business Studies, Accountancy): Combines technology and statistics — suited for data analytics and quantitative business roles.
- PEBA (Political Science, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy): Blends commerce with social science — useful for civil services, law, and public policy alongside business fundamentals.
Who should choose Commerce? Students interested in business, finance, accounting, banking, entrepreneurship, or economics. A strong aptitude for numbers is helpful but not as critical as in Science — Commerce Maths is simpler than the Mathematics studied in the Science stream.
Career paths after Commerce PU: B.Com, BBA, CA (Chartered Accountancy), CS (Company Secretary), CMA (Cost and Management Accountancy), banking and insurance, MBA (after graduation), economics research, and more.
mLAC offers all four Commerce combinations with integrated CA Foundation coaching by ProEdge for interested students. See the Commerce stream page for details, or read our in-depth comparison of SEBA vs CEBA vs CSBA vs PEBA.
Arts Stream
The Arts stream is often underestimated, but it leads to some of the most intellectually rewarding and socially impactful careers. In Karnataka PU, common Arts combinations include:
- HEPS (History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology): The classic Arts combination, ideal for civil services (IAS/IPS/KAS), law, journalism, and public administration.
- PEPS (Psychology, Economics, Political Science, Sociology): Adds Psychology — suited for students interested in counselling, human resources, social work, and behavioural sciences.
Who should choose Arts? Students who are drawn to reading, writing, debate, current affairs, history, human behaviour, or social issues. Arts is not a fallback option — it is a deliberate choice for students who want careers in law, civil services, media, social sciences, education, or the humanities.
Career paths after Arts PU: BA (various specialisations), BA LLB (5-year integrated law degree), journalism and mass communication, social work, psychology, political science, public administration, teaching, UPSC and state PSC examinations, and more.
At mLAC, Arts students have access to CLAT classes by TIME Institute and IAS coaching by Topper IAS for those targeting law entrance exams. In the 2024-25 PU Board exams, mLAC's K R Shri Jeya Darshini scored 595 out of 600 in Arts — achieving State Rank 3. See the Arts stream page for more.
How to Decide: Five Practical Questions
If you are still unsure after reading about each stream, ask yourself these five questions honestly:
- Which subjects did I genuinely enjoy in Class 9 and 10? Not which subjects you scored highest in — which ones you actually looked forward to studying.
- Do I have a specific career goal? If you want to be a doctor, you must take Science (PCMB). If you want to be a CA, Commerce is the most direct path. But if you are unsure, that is perfectly normal at this stage.
- Am I choosing this stream because I want to, or because someone else expects me to? Peer pressure and parental expectations are real. But two years of studying subjects you dislike leads to poor performance and frustration.
- Can I handle the workload? PCMB is demanding. If you struggled with Maths or Science in SSLC, forcing yourself into the Science stream may do more harm than good. A high score in Commerce or Arts is far more valuable than a mediocre score in Science.
- What does my college offer within this stream? The quality of teaching, coaching tie-ups, and past results in a specific stream matter as much as the stream itself.
There Is No Wrong Choice
Every stream has excellent career prospects. The most important factor is choosing a stream that aligns with your interests and abilities — and then committing to it fully for two years. A student who excels in Commerce or Arts will always have better outcomes than a student who underperforms in Science simply because it was seen as the prestigious option.
Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni PU College in Malleswaram, Bengaluru offers all three streams with experienced faculty, integrated coaching, and a supportive campus environment.
